J939/P1052/P1066 & J945/P1073

Three different obverse dies exist for this. On two, liberty is incuse and on the third, liberty is in raised letters. None have Barber's initial 'B' in the folds of the ribbon at the back of Liberty's cap.

These were struck in the following combinations:

This has the tip of Liberty's cap under the "S" in "States" and liberty is in incuse letters.



Silver with reeded edge J939/P1052 This is fairly common.

Silver with plain edge J940/P1053 Less than a dozen are known.

Copper with reeded edge J941/P1054 Only 3 or 4 are known.

Copper with plain edge J942/P1055 This is unconfirmed.

Aluminum with reeded edge J943/P1057 This is unconfirmed.

Aluminum with plain edge J944/P1058 This is unconfirmed.

This second set uses an obverse with the head aligned more like the one used in 1869. The tip of Liberty's cap is under the "E" in "States". Liberty is again in incuse letters.



Silver with reeded edge J939/P1066 This is fairly common.

Silver with plain edge J940/P1067 This is unconfirmed.

Copper with reeded edge J941/P1068 Only 2 or 3 are known.

Copper with plain edge J942/P1069 Only 2 or 3 are known.

Aluminum with reeded edge J943/P1071 with at least 3 known.

Aluminum with plain edge J944/P1072 with at least 2 known.

The third type has Liberty in raised letters.

There are actually 2 dies like this. The first is the die of 1869 with point of crown under the letter 'E'.



The second is the die of 1870 with point of crown under the letter 'S'.



These are believed to use the second die only but there could be some with the first die.

Silver with reeded edge J945/P1073 This is fairly common.

Silver with plain edge J946/P1074 About a dozen are known.

Copper with reeded edge J947/P1075 Only a half dozen or so are known.

Copper with plain edge J948/P1076 Only a half dozen or so are known.

Aluminum with reeded edge J949/P1078 Only 2 or 3 are known including the corroded Superior 1/96, Morgan-StacksBowers 8/19 ANA, Heritage 1/20 FUN and 1997 ANA pieces.

Aluminum with plain edge J950/P1079 Possibly unique.

An incomplete lead reverse die splasher of the precursor to the reverse die used on these JA1870-1/P3386 is also known.
